Austrian President Kurt Waldheim today condemned what he described as Israeli human rights violations against Palestinians in the occupied territories, the official news agency reported.

The Austrian leader, a former U.N. secretary general who has been accused of taking part in war crimes as a former Nazi officer in the Balkans during World War II, is on an official visit to Kuwait.

“Austria strongly rejects the current Israeli practices against the Palestinian people in the occupied Arab territories,” Waldheim told Kuwaiti News Agency in an interview.

“Austria also demands that Israel stop its violations of the rights of the Palestinian people,” he said.

Waldheim’s statements came the day after Israelis voted in an election overshadowed by policy toward the West Bank and Gaza Strip, where Israeli troops have killed hundreds of Palestinians waging a violent 11-month uprising against the 21-year-old occupation.
