A subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland today announced the introduction of a credit card for use when paying for health care not covered by insurance.

The card, Medcash, can be used to charge medical and dental bills that are not covered by health policies, such as deductibles for hospital and doctor bills, medication, cosmetic surgery and other elective procedures.

Medcash can also be used for preventive health care, such as routine doctor visits and weight-loss clinics.

Cardholders do not have to belong to Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

After test-marketing in Baltimore, the card, with an initial credit line of $1,000 to $5,000, will be expanded nationally through Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans.
