Slight but Friendly ‘Alligator’ Tale

Share

“Are There Alligators in the Sewers of the City of Los Angeles?” is the hefty title of Aweezel Hed Stage Adventure’s slight but friendly play for children 12 and under at the Richmond Shepard Theatre A in Hollywood.

Three kids (played by adult actors Debra Dado, Gordon Roberts and Curt Crider) on the way to a Halloween party, decide to investigate an open manhole after T. J. (Roberts) says there are alligators down there.

They stumble upon the underground lair of robber and former snake charmer Ali Corpo (Rif Hutton), who has just pulled off a bank job and is hiding out with all his snakes in the sewer. Dressed in his snake-charming outfit, complete with gold turban, Corpo takes the trio prisoner. A battle of wits ensues and an alligator--of sorts--does appear, saving the day.

Peggy Simon Traktman’s script poses no challenges, but there’s enough nonsense and color to keep young audience members involved and the energetic cast is up to all the dashing around.

Bea Franklin’s costumes are bright and eye-pleasing, a good contrast to the underground gloom, and director Louise Capone has used to good advantage the existing set for “Fire Escape,” an adult play currently at the same theater. The addition of slime-covered pipes makes it a suitably spooky subterranean setting.

At 6476 Santa Monica Blvd., Sat ., 1:45 p.m., through Nov. 12. $5-$7. (213) 461-1566.
