Pasadena : Medical Science Award

J. Harold Wayland, Caltech emeritus professor of engineering science, has received the 1988 Malpighi Award, the highest honor of the European Society for Microcirculation.

Wayland is internationally known for his research on blood flow through the smallest vessels in the circulatory system and for his pioneering work in microscopic measurements to investigate fundamental life processes, a Caltech spokesman said.

Wayland, who lives in Pomona, received the Landis Award, the highest honor of the U.S. Society for Microcirculation, in 1981. He is former chairman of the medical sciences section of the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science. Once a research fellow in mathematics at Caltech, he later taught applied mechanics and then engineering science.
