Eleven people living in an old converted church were chased from their home Wednesday night when fire gutted the Watts-area building.

About 35 firefighters extinguished the greater-alarm blaze at 2212 E. 103rd St. in about 51 minutes, officials said. No injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross was called in to help residents of the burned-out building find lodging for the night.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the building near Jordan High School was “well involved” in flames, said Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.

The fire caused $85,000 in damage to the single-story structure and its contents, he said.
