Kitty Dukakis, fighting an infection that forced her to stop campaigning, will be kept in the hospital another day as a precaution, doctors said Wednesday.

“If everything stays as it is and she doesn’t have a relapse, she will probably leave sometime tomorrow,” said Paul Costello, her press aide.

The 51-year-old wife of the Democratic presidential candidate has a viral infection complicated by a bacterial infection, doctors said. They said she was being taken off intravenous antibiotics in favor of an oral drug to fight the infections.

Mrs. Dukakis entered the hospital Monday. She had hoped to join her husband in Connecticut today to help celebrate his 55th birthday, Costello said. Instead, she will travel to Chicago and join him for a torchlight parade Friday.
