Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government won House of Commons backing on Thursday for its ban on British television and radio interviews with the Irish Republican Army and 10 other militant groups in Northern Ireland.

The 650-seat House rejected by 244 votes to 183 an amendment by the opposition Labor Party seeking to condemn the ban as “incompatible with a free society.”

But several members of Thatcher’s Conservative Party sided with Labor in criticizing the ban as a damaging form of censorship.
