Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos were ordered by a federal judge in New York to produce financial records and other evidence related to their fraud and conspiracy indictment by Nov. 9 or be penalized--and possibly jailed--for contempt of court. However, the Marcoses’ lawyers asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block U.S. District judge John Walker’s contempt citation on the grounds that the ousted Philippine president and former first lady retain diplomatic immunity. Also, the lawyers said, the grand jury lacks authority to issue subpoenas seeking the evidence. The lawyers asked the high court to block the government from taking the Marcoses fingerprints, handwriting samples and voice-prints as part of the investigation into possible criminal activity.
