East Germany’s ruling Communist Party has for the first time appointed a woman to head one of the country’s 15 districts.

The party daily Neues Deutschland said Friday that Christa Zellmer had been made first secretary of the Frankfurt an der Oder district to replace Hans-Joachim Hertwig, who died in September. Zellmer, in the party since 1947, is 58 years old.
