The California Table Grape Commission is suspending a $250,000 campaign to counter the United Farm Workers’ grape boycott, saying consumers are not supporting the boycott in the first place. UFW spokeswoman Jean Cainai countered that the boycott is working and shows that “a majority of Californians have come to realize there are poisons on California table grapes.” The Table Grape Commission president said sales are up as much as 40% over last year. Cainai said the boycott has “gained tremendous momentum” but cited no figures. UFW leader Cesar Chavez staged at 36-day fast last summer to protest the use of pesticides on table grapes.
