Sikh separatists, attacking across Punjab state before a major Hindu holiday this week, killed 62 people in recent days, Indian officials reported, as the state’s 32,000-member police force was ordered on maximum alert. At least 20 Sikh gunmen masquerading as border police killed five Hindus in the village of Darapur, police said. They blamed Sikh extremists for five other earlier attacks that claimed 57 lives. Five Sikhs also were reported slain. Hindus, who form a vast majority in India but are outnumbered by Sikhs in Punjab, will celebrate Diwali, a festival of lights, on Wednesday.
