Thunderstorms in the South spawned tornadoes in North Carolina and Florida, where one woman was killed by a twister that destroyed her mobile home, while heavy snow fell in the far northern reaches of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. In north Florida, an early morning tornado lashed across Madison County, demolishing four homes, authorities said. Officials identified the fatality as Debbie Rutherford, 28. Her husband and three children were injured. In northeast North Carolina, a twister swept through a 14-block section of Elizabeth City, touching down twice and causing at least $500,000 in damage. Police Chief W. C. Owens said only “the good Lord’s will” prevented death and injury. Winter storm warnings for snow were posted over the western third of Upper Michigan, with accumulations ranging from 7 to 10 inches and up to 18 inches in scattered locations.
