Construction is under way on the world’s largest center for hearing research, at the southwest corner of 3rd and Alvarado streets, according to Dr. John House, president and chief executive officer of the House Ear Institute.
The $30-million facility is located across from the institute’s present location at 256 S. Lake St. on the campus of the St. Vincent Medical Center. Completion is scheduled for June.
Designed to complement the adjacent medical center in form, color and mass, the new complex will consist of the five-story George S. Eccles building to be used for research, education and patient care, plus the separate two-story Sam and Rose Stein Center for Deaf Children. The site will also have a 20,000-square-foot park.
Albert C. Martin and Associates, Los Angeles, is the architect and Peck/Jones Co., Los Angeles, contractor.
The House Ear Institute is affiliated with the USC School of Medicine and St. Vincent Medical Center.
