Drumbeat Takes Lead Over Pandemonium in L.A. Yacht Club’s Cabo San Lucas Race
Des McCallum’s Nelson-Marek 66, Pandemonium, was first across the leeward end line, but Don Ayres’s Santa Cruz-70, Drumbeat, took over the lead Saturday at the beginning of the Los Angeles Yacht Club’s Cabo San Lucas race.
Still struggling to cross the line 10 minutes after the start was John Scripps’ heavy displacement ketch Miramar.
The 36 yachts were hampered by dense fog and light winds. When the starting signal sounded at the L.A. Harbor breakwater, the wind was less than 5 knots and visibility was less than a half mile.
Most of the yachts were setting a course offshore in hopes of getting a better breeze. The fleet must leave Guadalupe Island, about 300 miles off the Baja California coast, to port before heading to the finish at Cabo San Lucas.
