Almost 3,000 Gulf service stations in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico will be converted to the Chevron brand at a cost of more than $50 million, a Chevron spokeswoman said. Spokeswoman Sherri Zippay said the switch should be concluded in 1989 and will give customers a “consistent product coast-to-coast.” Houston’s Gulf stations will be the first to undergo the change, starting in January, she said. Only Chevron’s Gulf stations in Oklahoma will survive the conversion, Zippay said. Chevron Corp. and Gulf Oil Corp. merged in 1984.
