Vice President George Bush, who won his first presidential primary here, easily defeated Michael S. Dukakis, and four-term Republican Rep. Judd Gregg defeated lawyer Paul McEachern in the race to succeed Gov. John Sununu, who decided not to seek a record fourth term.
With 46% of precincts reporting, Bush had 63% of the vote and Dukakis had 37%, giving Bush the state’s four electoral votes. Gregg defeated McEachern 62% to 38%.
Gregg, 41, is the son of former Gov. Hugh Gregg. McEachern, 50, is a Portsmouth lawyer and fierce opponent of the Seabrook nuclear plant who nearly rode the issue into the governor’s office two years ago.
Bush’s victory in the New Hampshire primary nine months ago revived his candidacy after his third-place finish in Iowa.
Former state Supreme Court Justice Chuck Douglas, a Republican, edged out James Donchess, the Democratic mayor of Nashua, after a bitter campaign to succeed Gregg in the 2nd District.
