Michael S. Dukakis won Wisconsin’s 11 electoral votes in a tight race in which his sizable lead in public opinion polls over Republican George Bush had evaporated as the election approached.

Democrat Herbert Kohl, a multimillionaire sports team owner, defeated the only woman nominated by a major party for the Senate this year as voters picked a successor to William Proxmire, who retired.

Kohl, the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team owner whose fortune came from a chain of grocery stores, competed against state Senate Minority Leader Susan Engeleiter, the Republican nominee.
