George Bush won North Carolina’s 13 electoral votes by a wide margin and Gov. James G. Martin became the first Republican chief executive ever reelected in North Carolina.
With 96% of the precincts reporting, Bush had 58% of the vote to 42% for Michael S. Dukakis.
Martin defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. Bob Jordan, who charged the governor with presiding over an unethical and incompetent administration.
Martin, 52, is a former college chemistry professor and six-term congressman. Jordan, 56, is a millionaire lumber company executive who served four terms in the state Senate.
