Michael S. Dukakis, who had finished third in Iowa’s first-in-the-nation precinct caucuses last February, soundly defeated George Bush in the race for the state’s eight electoral votes.

Bush also had finished third in the Iowa GOP caucuses. In the fall campaign, he suffered from unpopular Reagan Administration farm policies and a Democratic edge in voter registration.

With 92% of the precincts counted, Dukakis had 604,469 votes or 55% and Bush had 492,371 votes or 45%.
