Illinois voters, after leaning much of the night in Michael Dukakis’ direction, gave their state’s 24 electoral votes to George Bush.
With 99% of the state’s precincts reporting, Bush had 2,294,154 votes, or 51%, to Dukakis’ 2,176,334 votes, or 49%.
Voters in Illinois, a critical swing state that has sided with the winner in all but two 20th-Century contests for the White House, also appeared to be soundly rejecting a proposal to call a state constitutional convention to consider revising the charter adopted in 1970.
In races for the state’s 22 congressional seats, House Republican Leader Bob Michel of Peoria survived a tough challenge from Democrat Doug Stephens, who gave Michel the toughest race of his career in 1982. Michel has been House minority leader since 1981.
Freshman GOP Rep. Jack Davis was defeated by former state Sen. George Sangmeister, a Democrat.
