Northern Ireland policewomen won Britain’s biggest sex discrimination award--almost $1.7 million. Northern Ireland Police Chief John Hermon had refused to renew the contracts of 310 officers, arguing they could not carry out full duties because he would not allow them to carry firearms or be trained in the use of them. The officers took their case to a Belfast industrial tribunal, and the police authority decided to settle out of court.
