PLO leader Yasser Arafat said that Israeli leaders recently attempted to have him assassinated. In an interview at his tightly guarded headquarters in the Tunisian capital of Tunis, Arafat said that “the Israelis have been trying to kill me for a long time” and charged that Israeli Cabinet minister Ariel Sharon and Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir “have tried again recently.” He did not elaborate. Israel declined to comment on the report. Khalil Wazir, the Palestine Liberation Organization’s top military leader, was assassinated April 16 in Tunis by commandos believed to be Israelis. Meanwhile, the PLO announced that it has requested a U.S. visa for Arafat so he can address the U.N. General Assembly this year.
