WASHINGTON —
The Navy has awarded National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. of San Diego a $242.8-million contract to build the first of a new class of fast supply ships to accompany aircraft carriers.
The AOE fast combat support ship is scheduled to be completed in June, 1992, the Navy statement said.
The 754-foot long, 48,998-ton ship will be capable of carrying petroleum, ammunition and food, and be able to travel at 26 knots, the Navy said.
