Australian Gael Martin, the 1984 Olympic bronze medalist in the women’s shotput, has been banned for the second time in her athletic career after testing positive for anabolic steroids, the Sydney Daily Telegraph reported.

According to the newspaper, Martin, now a weightlifter, was banned for 3 years by the International Powerlifting Federation.

Martin, who served an 18-month suspension after testing positive for stanozolol during the 1981 Pacific Conference Games in New Zealand, failed a test in May at the women’s World Powerlifting Championships in Brussels, Belgium.

The drug was the same illegal substance that led to the disqualification of Ben Johnson at the Seoul Olympics in September, after the Canadian sprinter finished first in the 100-meter dash.

Meanwhile, a former top-level Australian track and field coach, Kelvin Giles, alleged that numerous Australian athletes at Seoul probably took drugs during training for the Games.

“We had 29 athletes in the Olympic Games, and I would suggest that 25% of those had taken, or were taking (drugs) in their preparation for Seoul,” Giles told a parliamentary committee on the use of drugs by athletes.
