Regarding James Flanigan’s Oct. 2 column, “Social Security Surplus Must Not Be Abused”:

The column offered a fairly good explanation of the situation but missed the main point and offered a weak solution.

In short, Social Security should be considered a separate fund. This money is not to be used for general fund expenditures. It is for Social Security people only. The thieves in Congress will ultimately steal this money if it is not taken out of their greedy hands.

A good example of separate funding was the World War II National Service Life Insurance policies--this money was kept separate and we are still getting interest checks off that money.

The thieves didn’t get their hands on it. The G.I. insurance money was kept out of their reach.
