ENDANGERED PLANT: The state Department of Fish and Game reviews the status of endangered and threatened plants and animals every 5 years. The newest batch of 5-year reviews released by the department includes the salt marsh bird’s beak, a plant that was once widespread in coastal marshes from Morro Bay to northern Baja California.

Now the plant is restricted to a few isolated marshes, including Upper Newport Bay and possibly Anaheim Bay in Orange County. The plant, listed as endangered by both the state and federal governments, makes its home in the higher marsh, where it is regularly inundated by higher tides, but not on a daily basis.

Like other inhabitants of the salt marsh, the plant is the victim of declining habitat.
