The U.S. Information Agency and C-SPAN have signed an agreement that will allow USIA, “on an experimental basis,” to transmit the cable-satellite public affairs network overseas via the agency’s worldwide television satellite network. The agreement, made public Friday, calls for 24-hour C-SPAN programming “interspersed with USIA’s Worldnet’s regular interactive telepress conferences.” C-SPAN is a private, nonprofit cooperative of the U.S. cable TV industry that broadcasts live, uninterrupted coverage of major political and public affairs events. Brian Lamb, chairman of C-SPAN, said: “We welcome this arrangement because it allows us to experiment with showing viewers abroad the same process of American government that we currently offer 41 million households in this country.”
