British and Argentine officials have agreed to meet at the United Nations, which would be the highest-level formal contact between the two since the war over the Falkland Islands in 1982. A spokesman for Britain’s U.N. mission said that U.N. Ambassador Crispin Tickell has agreed to meet with Argentine Foreign Minister Dante Caputo, who is also president of the U.N. General Assembly. No date has been set, the spokesman added. Caputo was quoted in an interview with the Argentine daily La Nacion as saying that he had made overtures to Tickell for a meeting. The newspaper said diplomatic sources in Buenos Aires have indicated that the talks would be exploratory.
