President Daniel Ortega has written to President-elect George Bush, inviting him to negotiate an end to the war between the Managua government and the U.S.-backed Contras, the official daily Barricada said Sunday.

“On knowing the results of the election on Nov. 8 . . . I permit myself to greet you and express to you Nicaragua’s will to work to normalize relations between our countries,” Ortega said in a brief letter dated Saturday. “I invite you to work together with me to make this noble desire for peace a reality.”

Ortega’s letter made no specific proposals. He has said he will ask Bush to negotiate the complete withdrawal of foreign troops and military advisers from Central America as part of a peace agreement.
