The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has appointed a panel of Wilmington community, business and labor leaders to advise port officials on community concerns.

The 18-member Wilmington Community Advisory Committee will “provide a vehicle by which the board and the port can really understand the concerns of the community and vice versa,” port spokeswoman Julia Nagano said.

Nagano said that port officials have identified a 29-acre parcel of land at the foot of Avalon Boulevard to provide community access to the waterfront and that one of the committee’s duties will be to plan for development of that site.

The committee is also charged with implementing the recommendations of a task force that studied the problem of port-related truck traffic in the community. Among other things, the task force recommended designating a route to keep trucks off residential streets.
