MacLean Lifts UCLA Past AIA, 94-91

Freshman Don MacLean scored 31 points and had 11 rebounds in 29 minutes as UCLA beat Athletes in Action, 94-91, in an exhibition basketball game Tuesday night in front of 2,451 at Pauley Pavilion.

“We executed the offense and got him some good shots,” Coach Jim Harrick said of the 6-foot 10-inch MacLean, who made 13 of 19 shots. “If you do what you’re supposed to do, Pooh (Richardson) is going to get you the ball.”

Richardson had 19 points and 13 assists, and Trevor Wilson had 30 points and 7 rebounds for the Bruins, who overcame a 9-point second-half deficit.

Reserve guard Lorenzo Romar scored 19 points to lead Athletes in Action, which flew into Los Angeles Tuesday from Milwaukee and played their 12th game in 14 nights. Former UCLA guard Rod Foster had 15 points and 7 assists for AIA (6-8).

Bruin Notes

Coach Jim Harrick used a starting lineup of forwards Trevor Wilson and Don MacLean, center Kevin Walker and guards Pooh Richardson and Kevin Williams. . . . UCLA signed forward Zan Mason, a 6-foot 7-inch forward at Westchester High, bringing to three the number of players signed by the Bruins in the early signing period, which ends today. Harrick said the Bruins are in the running for two more players, both of whom are expected to sign before tonight’s midnight deadline. . . . UCLA will play the Adelaide 36ers of Australia next Tuesday night before opening the regular season against Texas Tech Nov. 26 at Pauley Pavilion.
