Japan Urged to Stop Brazil Timber Imports
The World Wildlife Fund on Thursday protested Japan’s new practice of importing timber from Brazil’s tropical forests, calling the move another step toward destruction of the forests.
“We are calling on the Japanese traders or government to go along with a Brazilian ban on log exports,” said Adam Markham, campaign coordinator for the conservationist group.
Japan has been given an exemption from Brazil’s policy against log exports.
A spokesman for the Japanese government said the importation of timber from Brazil was a recent development and that he will need more time to study the issue.
