Cuba OKs Namibia Peace Plan
Cuba today accepted a regional peace plan for southwestern Africa that will mean the withdrawal of its 50,000 troops from Angola combined with independence for South African-ruled Namibia (formerly South-West Africa).
A terse statement on the front page of the official newspaper Granma said the decision was relayed to the United States in its role as mediator in negotiations over the last six months involving Angola, Cuba and South Africa. The Cuban approval paved the way for the signing of a peace plan at a forthcoming meeting in Brazzaville, Congo, for which no date has been set.
