Radon Bills Vetoed
As David W. Myers pointed out in his article about radon (Oct. 9), I have authored legislation for the past two years calling for a state Department of Health Services survey of homes for radon. Without scientific testing, we cannot know for certain which parts of the state are prone to cancer-causing levels of radon.
Gov. George Deukmejian has vetoed my legislation for two years consecutively, even though the bills were approved with bipartisan support in the Legislature. The governor has delayed action, claiming that a small Air Resources Board (ARB) study is an adequate state response to the radon problem. Unfortunately, the ARB study is fatally flawed, and will not provide the information we need.
