Re “And Doggy Makes Three,” by Margo Kaufman (Oct. 2): Yes, Margo, women who love doggies need pet-loving mates and shouldn’t have to make a choice. But often they do. Actor James Stewart has the simple solution. When I was interviewing Mr. Stewart a few years ago, he asked why I didn’t have a husband. “There isn’t room in the bed,” I answered. “I sleep with three dogs.” With great sincerity Mr. Stewart offered, “Waall, why don’t ya get a, get a bigger bed?” Bless his heart.

As Jimmy Stewart has long been a role model for the American male, I share this story in the hope that more men will adopt his understanding attitude.
