Cuomo’s Plane Makes Emergency Landing
New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo’s official plane made an emergency landing at a closed airport early Sunday after an electrical malfunction filled the cabin with smoke, officials said.
The 22-year-old Grumman G-1 aircraft was carrying the governor and five others, including two pilots, from a speaking engagement in New Orleans, said Cuomo spokesman Terry Lynam.
Lynam said the smoke may have come from a communications radio that overheated. After shutting down all the cabin lights, the pilots used flashlights to read the instruments for the emergency landing. They were assisted by the pilot of another plane in the area, who activated the runway lights at the closed Williamsport airport so the governor’s plane could land safely, Lynam said.
The plane was left in Williamsport, where investigators will look for the cause of the electrical problem.
