The Western Center for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which is based at UC Irvine, has received $50,000 for studies in biomedical ethics.

The Monsanto Co. of St. Louis contributed $40,000 of the money, and UCI donated the remainder.

Gerald Bradford, executive director of the Western Center, said the two grants will enable more study of the ethical issues that “have arisen as a result of scientific and technological advances in the area of biomedicine and its related fields.”

Bradford added that the academy “does not advocate a particular position on such issues, but we definitely emphasize ethical concerns in various study projects we are undertaking.”

The Western Center was established in 1970 and initially was at Stanford University in Palo Alto. The center moved to the UCI campus in 1985.
