Two Chinese lovers blew themselves up with a bomb on the Great Wall and seriously injured a New Zealand woman, a New Zealand Embassy official said Tuesday.

A police spokesman said the Chinese lovers, both married to others, died when they set off the bomb Monday in a turret on the Badaling section of the Great Wall. The site, 43 miles northwest of Beijing, is one of China’s most popular tourist spots.

Items found nearby identified them as a 33-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman from the northeastern province of Jilin who were married to others.

The New Zealander, who was next to the couple, suffered head injuries and lost an eye. Her sister was quoted in official Chinese reports as saying she saw the couple embrace and look at the scenery shortly before they set off the bomb.

An embassy official said the injured woman, Colleena Wong, was operated on for six hours in a Beijing hospital.
