‘A Government to Despise’

Klein’s article was terrific; he couldn’t have written it any better.

I am one of those “children of the ‘60s” who voted for Dukakis but who is very happy that Bush and Dan Quayle were elected.

It’s no fun to be part of the establishment. People of my age group aren’t used to it (I’m 40). I’m much happier and more comfortable being on the outside looking in. I don’t have to be responsible for any of the problems of the next four years. I didn’t vote for Bush. It’s not my problem.

It would have been dreadful if Dukakis had won. I’d have no one to make fun of. Dukakis would have to be responsible for the nasty things like the deficit. Like Danny Ortega. Like appointing Supreme Court judges.

But as a part of the loyal opposition we can write letters to the editor about the terrible Bush-Quayle Administration. We can joke about Marilyn Quayle’s hair and Danny Quayle’s lack of brain power. (What were Dan Quayle’s three hardest years? Second grade.)

And, we have Jesse Jackson to stir up trouble for the next four years.

It’s much better to have voted and lost. Now Bush is stuck with the problems: Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Tex.) a big wheel in the Senate, Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) making snide remarks, etc.

It’s going to be a very interesting four years.
