A governor’s task force recommended 17 changes in Kentucky’s bus safety standards, including requiring a new emergency exit, six months after 27 people died in a church bus crash. Also among the Governor’s Task Force on Bus Safety recommendations were a requirement that privately owned buses meet federal safety standards and that the state set standards for bidding on surplus school buses. On May 14, a bus, bought by a church as surplus from a school district, was carrying people home from an outing when it collided with a pickup truck on a highway, killing 24 children and three adults.
