A gunman who tried to kill Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Ozal with a World War I-vintage pistol was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the Anatolian news agency reported. A three-judge panel in Ankara had ordered Kartal Demirag’s execution by hanging, but then the judges lowered the sentence because Ozal survived.
