Tank Falls Into Pit; 3 U.S. Soldiers Die

FRANKFURT, West Germany — Three U.S. soldiers were killed in a nighttime training operation in Bavaria when their tank fell into a pit and overturned, the U.S. Army reported Wednesday.
The accident Sunday night at the Hohenfels military training grounds also injured another soldier, Army spokesman 1st Lt. Patrick Sawyer said in a telephone interview from 3rd Infantry Division headquarters in Wuerzburg.
Sawyer identified the dead soldiers as Capt. Donald M. Kessler, 31, of Canton, Ga.; Staff Sgt. James Frear, 30, of Deridder, La., and Spec. Anthony T. Tallos, 20, of Philadelphia.
