A strong, early dose of wintry weather with stiff winds, snow and freezing temperatures was blamed for at least five deaths in Italy. Snow fell on the Yugoslav coast for the first time in a decade. In Portugal, rain flooded scores of homes and two yachts sank in rough seas. The harsh weather brought the first snowfall of the year to many regions of Italy.
