Leftist Guerrillas Kill 6 Salvadoran Soldiers
Leftist rebels killed six soldiers in an ambush on El Salvador’s main highway and an attack on a military post on the outskirts of the capital, rebel and military reports said Thursday.
The rebels’ clandestine Radio Venceremos said insurgents Wednesday exploded a mine under an army truck on the Pan American highway 37 miles west of San Salvador and then sprayed the soldiers with gunfire, killing five and wounding four.
Early Thursday morning, rebels attacked positions of the army’s 1st Infantry Brigade at El Pito, in the Apopa suburb, in a two-hour attack. One soldier was killed and two wounded, sources said.
