Perry Leads SDSU Women in Tournament

Chana Perry had 31 points and 27 rebounds to lead the San Diego State women’s basketball team to a season-opening 82-64 victory over Alabama State in the Nevada Reno tournament Friday in Reno.

Perry, a 6-foot 5-inch senior center, added 5 steals and 2 blocked shots. Brooke Meadows had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Julie Evans, a transfer from USD, added 16 points for San Diego State.

Angelica Jackson, an All-American volleyball player a year ago at San Diego State, had 10 rebounds. San Diego State had 80 rebounds to 33 for Alabama State.

San Diego State plays Nichols State tonight in the second day of the round-robin tournament.

USD advanced to the championship game of the Down East Auto Classic in Orono, Me., with a 52-49 victory over the University of Maine.

Candida Echeverria, playing with a mask to protect a broken nose, led USD with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Christi English had 8 points and Molly Hunter added 6 points and 7 rebounds. Ten of USD’s 13 players played, and the Toreras held Maine to 3 points in the first 8 minutes.

USD meets Duke, which beat Eastern Washington, 79-57, for the title today at noon.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC San Diego defeated San Jose Bible College, 96-76, and Claremont-Mudd defeated Cal Lutheran, 71-70, to advance to the finals of the Triton Tipoff. Tim Rapp scored 28 points to lead UC San Diego.

Utah State guard Reid Newey scored 31 points, including 7 3-point baskets, as the Aggies handed Athletes in Action its 12th consecutive loss, 86-84. Rod Foster led AIA with 24 points, including 6 3-pointers, and Lorenzo Romar had 17.

AIA led by as many as 17, but Utah State took the lead midway through the second half during a 20-0 run. Utah State took its biggest lead at 79-65 before AIA went on a 12-0 run to pull to 79-77 with 2 minutes 33 seconds left.

VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore Angela Martin came off the bench in the third game to spark San Diego State to a five-game victory over Penn State in the Texas tournament in Austin.

Martin had 16 kills in the 16-14, 4-15, 14-16, 16-14, 15-5 victory. Senior Jackie Mendez led SDSU (25-10) with 28 kills, 14 in the fourth-game victory.

San Diego State will play sixth-ranked Texas tonight.

GOLF

Monday is the deadline to enter the Dec. 10 amateur qualifying tournament for the 1989 Shearson Lehman Hutton Open at Torrey Pines South. Entry fee is $75, which includes a season ticket to the tournament. For information, call the Century Club at 281-4653.
