Nazi Extradited From Argentina
An Argentine judge today ordered the extradition to West Germany of alleged Nazi war criminal Josef Schwammberger, who is accused of murdering and torturing hundreds of prisoners in occupied Poland.
Two court officials who asked not to be identified said the legal order approving an extradition request from a West German court was signed by Judge Vicente Bretal of La Plata, 35 miles south of Buenos Aires.
They said lawyers for the 76-year-old former concentration camp commander were appealing the decision.
Schwammberger was arrested by Argentine police on Nov. 13, 1987, on an extradition request issued by a court in Stuttgart, West Germany.
An Austrian-born officer in Hitler’s SS corps, the Nazi Party police who guarded concentration camps and other installations, Schwammberger is accused of shooting at least 35 prisoners to death at point-blank range.
He is also accused of torturing other prisoners, looting their possessions and dumping wounded prisoners into bonfires.
