The California Highway Patrol said that 109 people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving on Southland highways and that a youth was killed in an Anaheim car crash over the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend that ended at midnight Sunday.

For the same holiday period last year, two people were killed in the county and 97 arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

“As holidays go, this was pretty routine,” said CHP spokeswoman Leslie Hill, adding that the CHP statewide dispatched extra units to patrol for suspected drunk drivers during the holiday period beginning Wednesday night.

The fatality occurred Saturday about 5:40 p.m., when Dan Patrick Yarnall, 17, smashed into a concrete wall at the intersection of Rio Vista and Frontera streets in Anaheim.

Statewide, 66 people were killed and 2,028 arrested on suspicion of driving under influence of alcohol. A year ago, 62 people died on state streets and highways during the Thanksgiving holiday, and 2,181 people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
