Surrogates

Welcome to the 1990s, an era of Third-World surrogate birthing and sometime socioeconomic fetal franchising.

After reading Patrick McDonnell’s article on Lydia Michelle Haro, I have to believe that’s the good news (“Mexican Woman’s Case Draws New Attention to Surrogate Motherhood,” Part I, Nov. 14). The bad news is that predatory parenting will get worse before it gets better if we don’t stop thinking of children as commodities to be bought and sold--or manufactured at will. And if we don’t provide decent and affordable housing, food and medical support to those members of our society less fortunate than ourselves.

Because when all is said and done, Lydia Michelle Haro, age 2 1/2, is not the only victim. We all are.
