The World : Global AIDS Estimate Cut

Share

The World Health Organization slashed its estimate of the number of people expected to contract AIDS by 1991, saying the lower figure resulted from changes in the behavior of high-risk groups. The organization said that 6 million to 7 million people are expected to be infected with the AIDS virus in the next three years. That figure was sharply lower than the U.N. agency’s estimate in March, 1987, that 50 million to 100 million could be infected by 1991. The organization said the worldwide total of officially reported cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome was 129,385 in 142 countries in November. It estimated the true number of AIDS victims at twice that number and said that 5 million to 10 million may be infected with the virus.
