Squalls whipping in off the Great Lakes brought up to a foot of snow Thursday to parts of New York and Ohio, weather officials said.

The National Weather Service reported that 12 inches of snow covered the ground at Colden, Dunkirk and Springville, N.Y., while 8 inches fell at North Perry and Madison, Ohio.

Forecasters said cold, Canadian air was blowing across the warmer waters of the Great Lakes, picking up moisture and depositing it as snow along colder areas just inland from the lakefronts.

Other States Get Snow

Lesser amounts of snow fell in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee, forecasters said.

The weather service said up to 6 inches of new snow could fall in snow belt areas of New York and Ohio by this morning.

Elsewhere, weather officials reported some lowland flooding Thursday in eastern and northeastern Arkansas. Little Rock and Hope, Ark., reported record rainfall for the month of November.

Flood warnings were posted over the Sulphur River and Cypress Creek basins of northeastern Texas, and for the Sabine River Basin in eastern Texas.

Forecasters said frost and freezing temperature warnings were posted for overnight along the South Carolina coast and much of the North Carolina coast.
